Over the past few years there has been an increasing interest in these larger Waterwheels. Some interest purely as decorative others,
fully functional working waterwheels for pumping water or producing electricty.
The design is for an overshot type waterwheel. The overshot waterwheel is fed water over the top and into the buckets.
This type of waterwheel in my opinion is the most efficent, using the flow and the weight of water to turn the waterwheel.
The underpass waterwheel uses only the flow of the water to make it turn and is limited to the speed of the water.
A basic general over view for the design of the 12 foot overshot Waterwheel.
38 foot circumference
16 Spokes per side
32 to 48 buckets
2 to 3 foot wide
Shaft size 3inch (76mm)
Sealed Bearings Flange mounted or pillow block.
Variables depend on several things: end usage for the waterwheel, water flow, water volume also site restrictions.
